The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta in this pandemic period continue to offer a series of cultural events ranging from Cinema, Music, Art, Dance, Science, Literature, Cuisine, Cultural Heritage and many more through the cycle of #vivilitaliainindonesia.

The Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta in collaboration with the European Studies Study Program of Universitas Indonesia presents a webinar entitled “Contemporary Cinema in Response to the Pandemic. A comparison: Italy and Indonesia. The webinar will be opened by Mr. Athor Subroto, Ph.D, the Director of School of Strategic and Global Studies Universitas Indonesia. Then followed by an overview about Italian contemporary cinema by the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta, Mrs. Maria Battaglia.

This seminar will include three speakers, which are the protagonist of the cinema industry.

The first one is Cristina Picchi, an award winning Italian artist, filmmaker and writer based in Italy and London. She wrote, directed and edited short films and documentaries that were screened in festival and galleries worldwide, winning numerous prizes such as the Silver Leopard in Locarno and a nomination for Best Short Film at the European Film Awards 2013 and the Italian Academy Awards 2020. Her first feature was nominated for the Solinas screenwriting Prize and was supported by the Sundance Institute.

The second speaker is Asmara Abigail, an Indonesian actress who had her debut playing as a leading actress in a feature film by Garin Nugroho, Setan Jawa in 2016. Since its premiere, Setan Jawa has been traveling around the world. Asmara has been starring in more than 20 films within 4 years, including a short film directed by an Italian director, Francesco Crivaro entitled Il Vespista. At the 4th International Film Festival and Wards, Asmara was awarded as one of the Asian Stars: Up Next by Variety Magazine together with 7 other actors and actress across Asia.

The third speaker is Wregas Bhanuteja, a young Indonesian filmmaker. He grew up and knew about filmmaking for the first time in Yogyakarta, Central Java. He graduated from Jakarta Institute of Arts in 2014 with film directing major. He made some short films including "Lembusura " (2015) that competed in Berlin International Film Festival 2015. In 2016 he won Best Short Film in Cannes Critics Weeks with his short film "Prenjak/In The Year of Monkey" (2016) and won Silver Screen Award for best short film in Singapore International Film Festival 2016. His latest short film "No One is Crazy in This Town" (2019) competed in Sundance Film Festival 2020. Now he is working for a script for his first feature film.

This encounter of Italian and Indonesian film industry workers will develop a dialogue about the current condition of the cinema industry based on the first hand experience of the speakers. Furthermore the speakers will share their observations and reflections over possible future of the cinema. The discussion will be led by Dr. Polit. Sc., Henny Saptatia DN, Head of the European Studies of the Universitas Indonesia.
