HARLEQUIN AND HIS SECRETS

Workshop of Commedia dell’ Arte with Maestro Enrico Bonavera

Enrico Bonavera is one of the most important interpreters in the character of Harlequin – the icon of Italian Commedia dell’Arte – in the world. Commedia dell’arte was an early form of professional theatre, originating from Italy. It was the most successful form of popular performance in Europe from the 16th through the 18th century. Thanks to the masks from the carnivals of Venice, Rome and Naples the image of the Italian baroque theatre was known around the world.

In the 20th century the myth of Commedia dell’Arte gave impulse to several theatre experiences; many artists such as Meyerhold, Copeau, Dullin, Strehler, Besson, Mnouchkine found that Commedia dell’Arte played a great role in their works. A lot of theatre schools then decided to include the techniques of the mask and the improvisation in their pedagogic method.

The workshop will offer you the possibility to reveal the secrets of this incredible character of Harlequin of the Commedia dell’Arte.
