Speaker: Davide Abbatescianni
This year, Europe on Screen 2022 in partnership with EU Consortium and Cineuropa will present a pre-festival workshop on film criticism. This is a 2-day workshop with Davide Abbatescianni (journalist & film critic) on film criticism, especially in the social media era.
Davide Abbatescianni is a journalist and film critic based in Rome. He currently works as a foreign correspondent for the EU-funded magazine Cineuropa, where he regularly writes about European cinema. His bylines also appeared on other international publications such as The Calvert Journal, Al Jazeera English, The New Arab, Variety, New Scientist, POV Magazine, Reader’s Digest, Filmexplorer, Film Ireland, Cinemafemme.com, the Europa Distribution’s blog and the Independent Cinema Office’s blog. He is a film curator for the project Support to EU Film Festivals, whose primary mission is to enhance the quality of festivals organised by the delegations of the European Union worldwide. He also works as a festival consultant and as an External Examiner in Film Studies for the International Baccalaureate.
He is a member of film critics associations, such as FIPRESCI, FEDEORA and NECS.
This workshop will be divided into 2 sessions in 2 days.
The first day is open for the general public and film enthusiasts of all levels. The duration of the workshop will be approx. 2-3 hours.
The second day is only open for selected participants who are interested in pursuing the practical approach of writing film criticism. Participants have to submit samples of their writing on film, be it film review, film commentary or film criticism. Samples of writing are preferably in English, but you can also submit your sample of writing in Indonesian. Please note that the workshop is conducted in English.
This session only has limited slots available to ensure a more effective and hands-on approach to the course.
Application is open from 17 May– 27 May 2022 (submission deadline may close as soon as the slots are filled).

Disclaimer:
All sessions in the course will be conducted in English. Should the participants need help in translating their questions for Davide, the festival team will help translate to Davide.
Participants must choose between day one or day two, or both days. Please note that the session on the second day only applies for participants who have submitted their past work on film-related writing.
Selected participants will be informed via email a few days before the course starts.
All selected participants will receive a private Zoom Meeting link.
All selected participants are expected to attend the workshop based on their choices of dates.
The course is free of charge.

Tahun ini, Europe on Screen 2022 bersama dengan EU Consortium dan Cineuropa mengadakan workshop pra-festival mengenai film criticism/kritik film. Workshop ini akan diadakan selama 2 hari bersama dengan Davide Abbatescianni (jurnalis dan kritikus film) yang akan membicarakan mengenai kritik film terutama di era media sosial ini.
Davide Abbatescianni adalah seorang jurnalis dan kritikus film yang berdomisili di Roma. Ia saat ini bekerja sebagai wartawan mancanegara untuk majalah Cineuropa yang didukung oleh EU, dimana ia biasanya menulis mengenai sinema Eropa. Hasil tulisannya juga pernah muncul di beberapa publikasi mancanegara seperti The Calvert Journal, Al Jazeera English, The New Arab, Variety, New Scientist, POV Magazine, Reader’s Digest, Filmexplorer, Film Ireland, Cinemafemme.com, the Europa Distribution’s blog and the Independent Cinema Office’s blog. Ia adalah kurator film untuk projek Support to EU Film Festivals, yang misi utamanya adalah untuk meningkatkan kualitas festival-festival yang diorganisir oleh delegasi-delegasi dari European Union di seluruh dunia. Ia juga bekerja sebagai konsultan festival dan penguji eksternal dalam studi film untuk International Baccalaureate. Ia adalah anggota dari beberapa asosiasi film seperti FIPRESCI, FEDEORA dan NECS.
Workshop ini akan dibagi menjadi 2 sesi dalam 2 hari.
Hari pertama terbuka untuk umum dan para pecinta film dari semua kalangan. Durasi workshop hari pertama adalah sekitar 2-3 jam.
Hari kedua hanya terbuka untuk peserta yang tertarik untuk mendalami penulisan kritik film dengan pendekatan praktis. Peserta diharuskan untuk memberikan contoh sampel hasil penulisan mengenai sebuah film, baik ulasan film, komentar maupun kritik film. Sampel penulisan sebaiknya dalam Bahasa Inggris namun anda dapat memberikan contoh sampel penulisan dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Perlu diingat bahwa workshop ini akan dilaksanakan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris.
Sesi ini hanya memiliki kuota terbatas untuk memastikan pendekatan pembelajaran secara langsung yang lebih efektif.

Catatan:
Semua sesi akan dilaksanakan dalam Bahasa Inggris. Jika peserta perlu bantuan untuk menerjemahkan pertanyaan kepada Davide, maka akan dibantu oleh tim festival.
Peserta harus memilih untuk mengikuti antara hari pertama, hari kedua, atau kedua-duanya. Mohon diingat bahwa sesi hari kedua hanya untuk peserta yang sudah mengumpulkan contoh hasil kerja penulisan mengenai film.
Peserta yang terpilih akan diberitahukan melalui email beberapa hari sebelum pembelajaran dimulai.
Semua peserta terpilih akan menerima private Zoom Meeting link.
Semua peserta terpilih diharapkan untuk hadir sesuai dengan hari yang telah dipilih.
