Gemma, a landlord’s daughter, loves Paolo but cannot marry him upon learning he is her half-brother. She weds Franco, a neglectful professor, and falls into an affair orchestrated by Countess Elvira, who later blackmails her. Pushed to the edge, Gemma wounds Elvira, driving her away and ultimately reconciling with her husband.
